Frog Day Afternoon

It was a wonderfully warm afternoon in the garden.  Amelia was running around, sweating in the sunshine.  And I was rummaging through the flower beds looking for frogs…and found three!

We haven’t had rain for about a week, but the gardener is busy with the hose every morning.  Each of these flowers is full of water…you may be able to see the reflection in the photo below.  The frog was actually submerged when I found it, but I flushed him out a little for a better look.

More Mpanga Forest Reserve

I finally got around to reviewing the other photos from our trip to Mpanga this morning.  I’m using a point and shoot Canon G12…a nice camera, but clearly not up to the task of taking great super macro shots.  If you want great, check out Nick Hobgood’s shots of jumping spiders over at C-O-N-G-O!  Nonetheless, here are a couple of the cool critters we found today.

The Very Hairy Caterpillar

This Caterpillar was hanging by a thread, suspended about 30 feet from the canopy.

Mpanga Forest Reserve

Diane, Amelia, Lendell and I headed west to the Mpanga Forest Reserve today.  It’s a great day-trip out from Kampala, only about 45 minutes…if you can beat the traffic!

Caterpilar at Mpanga

The highlight of the day was this white butterfly.  The back of the butterfly looked like the front of a moth.

Wasp, Moth, or Something Else?

We’re not sure exactly what this is.  Check out the shadow detail through the wings.

Another shot from this morning’s bug hunt

Moth

I have a feeling that moths will became one of my favorite critters to photograph, especially once I get a decent macro lens.

Bug Hunting in the Backyard

Amelia, Diane and I went out into the wilds of our backyard this morning on a bug hunt. We found a few cool critters hanging around including this amazing little spider. I know nothing about spiders, but I have a feeling I may be learning very soon. Right now, it just looks awesome! CLICK HERE or on the photo for a larger view.

The grey tree frog has been in the same area for the last couple of days, perfectly placed at eye level on some vines climbing one of the bigger trees on the property. The frogs don't even blink when I put my macro camera up close. Easy peasy to shoot...if you can find them.

And finally, I couldn't help including a shot of this fly, with beautiful blue iridescent stripes.
